On Saturday, January 17, we took a trip out to Felton (near Santa Cruz) to take a ride on a steam engine train at the Roaring Camp Railroad. It's a train ride up through a preserved old growth forest of coastal redwoods. We had a great time on the train, feeding ducks, and just goofing around.
My mom was able to come that night and visit for a couple of days--it was really nice for all of us, but it seemed especially comforting to Campbelle to have a little piece of home. We drove the 17-Mile Drive in the afternoon, then Steve had to go to a study group, so us girls found the Monarch Sanctuary--it was really beautiful to see all the butterflies. Steve, my mom, Aubree, and Brinnan went whale-watching the next day, but I haven't gotten the pictures from Steve. It was a beautiful day and there were around 40 whale sightings! My mom left Tuesday afternoon, but not before checking out the sea lions close to Fisherman's Wharf and a trip to our favorite--Carmel Beach. The weather was wonderful--still unseasonably warm, so after dropping my mom off at the airport, we headed back to the beach to enjoy the warmth before the rain. It has been cold and rainy since (the sun finally decided to pop out today, although it has stayed rather cool) but who can complain after the couple of weeks of perfection that we had!

I read about that railroad in Family Fun magazine a few years ago. I tore out the article and we tried to go last March when we were in Monterey. We arrived too late in the day. We'll have to get the details from you so we can go this year.
I think Carmel Beach is one of my favorite places in the world too. How much longer are you in CA?
